Our Surgeons are two of the most talented obesity surgeons in the state of Michigan. Drs. Webber and Edelman are experts in advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques (minimally invasive surgery) and apply this expertise to their bariatric practice. Patient safety is paramount and our group has one of the lowest complication rates in the state of Michigan.

Our philosophy is to provide a technically perfect operation, with intense patient follow-up to ensure that our patients get the most out of their weight loss surgery. We have extensive experience with both the gastric bypass and LAP-BAND® operation and will serve as your advocate throughout your journey to a healthier and happier life.

Our surgeons are all board certified by the American Board of Surgery and are members in good standing of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), two of the most prestigious surgical societies in the world.

David Edelman

There are few physicians who are more compassionate or committed to the treatment of the bariatric patient than Dr. Edelman. He applies his expertise in laparoscopic surgery and his strong understanding of obesity as a disease to his patients every day, demonstrating the care and concern that has made his bedside manner well known throughout Michigan.

Dr. Edelman attended Wayne State University for both his Bachelor of Science degree and for medical school. He has been a surgical resident for the department of surgery here at the DMC since 2002. He was also Chief Administrative Resident in 2008-2009. During his residency he worked in research and had a number of abstracts and manuscripts published. If that did not keep him busy enough he was also very active in professional societies and review boards such as American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Diagnostic Radiology Internal Review Board, and VP Wayne State University/DMC Resident Council, just to name a few.

Mohamed Gazayerli

Dr. Gazayerli established his practice in 1967, attended his first bariatric courses and American Society of Bariatric Surgeons (ASBS) meetings in 1999, and began performing bariatric surgery in 2000. In recognition of Dr. Gazayerli’s standing among his peers, D Magazine named him one of "The Best Doctors in Detroit 2007" in bariatric surgery.

In addition to being an expert bariatric surgeon, Dr. Gazayerli is an abdominal surgery specialist. He uses advanced laparoscopic techniques to reduce surgical trauma and speed patient recovery times. Dr. Gazayerli performs a full range of abdominal laparoscopic surgeries such as the intricate Nissen fundoplication and other laparoscopic procedures of the stomach, small bowel, colon, and gallbladder. He was fortunate to be a Surgical Endoscopy Fellow at Mt. Sinai Medical Center of Cleveland in 1989, and he still performs upper endoscopy. He intends to be among the first to provide new endoscopic therapies for morbid obesity such as intragastric balloon placement and endoscopic suturing and stapling. Dr. Gazayerli is married and the proud father of four children. He is active in his community, and his favorite and most frustrating pastime is spending time with his family.

John Webber

John Webber, MD is one of the early pioneers who brought laparoscopic surgery to Southeastern Michigan. Dr. Webber has been performing laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery for almost five years and has one of the largest experience bases in all of Michigan.

Dr. Webber is one of the busiest surgeons in Michigan, but somehow manages to still find time for his wife and four children. It is hard to find a surgeon who is more committed to his patients than Dr. Webber who is well known for the extra steps he takes to prevent complications and ensure excellent weight loss outcomes. Dr. Webber attended college in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan and then came to Wayne State University for Medical School and residency. After graduating from residency, Dr. Webber was offered a job at Harper Hospital, where he has remained on staff for the last eight years.
